It’s Time for a Change

It’s Time for a Change

I never thought I would be so lucky to find a career path that brought me such joy and fulfillment as coaching has. Being given the honor of witnessing the evolution of so many of my clients from capable business owners to confident leaders has been incredible.

Investing the time in my own personal and professional development so I can be a better coach has transformed me into a role model for others I am proud of. Coaching has changed my life and allowed me to help others change theirs in such a powerful way.

And yet, I feel it’s time for a change. Over the past 15 years I have embraced change and it’s now time to make a big leap onto a new path – into the field of Health Insurance.

How it all came about

A client of mine, Jane Kassel, has been a Health Insurance Producer for over 10 years. Coming from Canada, I was used to free health care. You need to see a doctor; you make an appointment and see them for free. You need surgery, you get it done for free (well, you’d have to pay for the TV in your room). When we moved to the US, we had health care coverage from my husband’s employer. We got used to co-pays, co-insurance and deductibles. We really didn’t understand it, but like most Americans, we did what we were told. No one told us that we didn’t have to pay $1800 for an MRI because we didn’t meet our deductible. No one told us that the same MRI would be about $250 if we paid out of pocket. Over the past 8 years, I’ve learned a lot about health care and how broken the system is.

A few months ago, Jane introduced me to a plan called New Era that was unlike anything I’d seen before. As she educated me on the plan, she had me at the words – no copay, no coinsurance and a deductible only if you’re in the hospital. But it gets better. This insurance is a stated value coverage, so it provides a fixed dollar amount for the different services it covers. Fees are discounted to insurance rates and applied to the fixed dollar amount. So, for example, at my last doctor’s visit, an insurance claimed was filed for the visit for $171. It was discounted by $93.23 for a covered charge (paid to the doctor) of $77.77. The coverage I have provides $120 for a doctor’s visit. So, the difference of $120 – 77.77 = $42.23 was sent to me. Yes, that’s right – I made $42.23 for visiting my doctor.

If I had “normal” insurance – e.g. Blue Cross/Blue Shield, I would have had to pay a copay – usually  between $20 and $40. If I was a health share plan, I would have had to pay $177 out of pocket and remit it to the health share provider. I probably wouldn’t be reimbursed because the Unshared Amount ranging from $1,000 – $5,000 immediately kicks in.

While the New Era plan isn’t perfect, for people like me who are willing to take responsibility of their health and medical costs, it offers an opportunity to pay reasonable monthly premiums and get great insurance coverage. Did you know that sixty percent of all personal bankruptcies are due to medical expenses? This shouldn’t happen to anyone!

So, my big change is that I’m now going to be a Health Insurance Producer for New Era. I’m days away from getting my license. I’m making this career change because I believe in this product. I’m making this change because I want to educate people on how to advocate for their rights for affordable health care coverage. I’m making this change because too many small business owners don’t have good health care coverage and don’t even realize how much money they would have to put down if they got sick or hurt.

Whether you are currently looking for new coverage or are continuing into 2021 with your existing coverage, I’d love to show you what New Era coverage could do for you. No pressure, no obligation. I just ask for a curious and open mind so see if I can provide you with great coverage at a more affordable price.
